NEET Development Workshop.

This workshop took place on Monday 14th May 2007 from 10am to 1pm at Grosvenor House, Croydon.

Delegates discussed a wide variety of experiences, ideas and initiatives regarding VCS organisations working with the NEET learner cohort. The workshop examined all aspects of the positive contribution VCS make to this cohort and the particular issues, characteristics and difficulties faced by the NEET learners and their providers.

The workshop delegates pooled together a set of ideas and recommendations for the SLLC to take forward.

1. Joint provider packages should be developed and submitted as consortium tenders.

2. SLLC should seek funding to commission a NEET research project.

3. Providers should seek payment for referrals from existing contract holders.

4. SLLC should make stronger links with youth development teams and offender teams in order to initiate partnership working.

5. A strong lobby for EMA eligibility under NEET programmes (e.g. ESF) should be made.

6. Proposals should be drafted to FE providers to supply  them with NEET mentors.

7. Volunteership as a valid work experience and route to employment should be promoted to funders.

8. 14-15 school excluders were seen as another possible route of future joint working.
