What is this thing called ChangeUp?

ChangeUp is a Government initiative that has been developed from the Government’s cross-cutting review of the voluntary and community sector’s role in public service delivery. This initiative is designed to modernise and improve voluntary and community sector (VCS)infrastructure (agencies that provide support and services to voluntary and community organisations).

The vision of ChangeUp

“…By 2014 the needs of frontline voluntary and community organisations will be met by support which is available nationwide, structured for maximum efficiency, offering excellent provision which is accessible to all while reflecting and promoting diversity and is sustainably funded.”
(The Home Office’s strategy for infrastructure)

Although the support needs of frontline organisations vary the key ones identified in the strategy are common to all: Performance Improvement; Workforce Development (including Human Resources); ICT; Governance; Recruiting and Developing Volunteers; and Funding VCS activity.

Capacity Builders

In June 2005 the Home Secretary announced the creation of the Capacitybuilders agency. Backed by a further £70 million over the next two financial years, this new sector-led agency will manage the ChangeUp framework at arms length from government.

Two resources have been produced through the Impact and Excellence Project (funded by ChangeUp). Although this project has focussed on Christian community work, this work may be of service to other sorts of faith-based or non-faith-based organisations. 

Ethos and Effectiveness:  Stories of Christian Community work is a collection of case studies of good practice in Christian community work.  Based around the perspectives of practitioners, this booklet explores issues of effectiveness and excellence to help to increase understanding of this sort of work and act as an resource for those engaged in it and is available to download from www.faithworks.info/uploads/documents/Ethos&Effectiveness.pdf
'Ethos, Effectiveness and Excellence' is available at www.faithworks.info, or on a free CD which can be ordered by contacting the Faithworks office on 0845 070 3571.  This will be a new resource for Christian projects and organisations that aims to help them consider who they are, what they do, and how they can become even better at doing it.

The SLCVS Partnership and ChangeUp

The South London CVS Partnership was commissioned by the London Regional ChangeUp Consortium to Work with sub-regional partners and the VCS to develop the South London sub-regional ChangeUp Infrastructure Development Plan. This plan:
• Sets out our long term vision
• Identifies key issues, gaps, opportunities and activities
• Shows how sub-regional activities will support local services and link up with sub-regional and regional work
