Learning in the Community (LiNC) II

Target group: Voluntary & Community groups working or based in one of the six Boroughs, focusing in particular on people who would not usually consider mainstream education, for example people with few or no qualifications, unemployed people, lone parents, people over 50, ethnic minorities and disabled people.

Project start date: April 2005 – March 2007

Aim: Building on the success and achievements of the previous LiNC work this project aims to help individuals least likely to participate in formal learning to access appropriate community based learning opportunities and to build the capacity of 60 voluntary and community organisations to provide learning for their members and users. Community learning grants will be available and the project will deliver learning opportunities to 600 individuals and support 60 learners to achieve a qualification and a further 60 learners to progress into formal education.

LiNC workers will promote the good practice from the Sustaining Community Learning Report (produced by the South London CVS Partnership in 2004) with local Colleges to enable sustainable relationships to develop with voluntary and community learning providers. This will ensure seamless progression for learners from the community into mainstream education.

Funding: The London South Learning & Skills Council and European Social Fund

Key staff: LiNC workers: Barbara Riddell (Kingston & Sutton); Jane Booth (Richmond); Stephen Blann (Merton)
Project Manager: Morag Plank (Merton CVS) Bhupendra Solanki (Croydon and Bromley)
