Sustaining Community Learning

Project start date: January 2004 - March 2004

Aim: Keyplayers Consultancy from Southern Ireland were employed to carry out an 'options feasibility study' to develop a strategy and appropriate learning delivery arrangement, for long-term sustainability of community based learning delivered by the voluntary and community sector. This study involved consultations with all those involved in the LiNC Programme; V & C organisations, learners, colleges, tutors, LiNC workers and the funder, and reviews of international practice in the field. The published SCL Report is excellent evidence that is being utilised to access more funding to ensure the success of the LiNC projects is built upon and access to appropriate learning opportunities for disengaged communities is provided.

Outcomes:Extracts from a letter to the Consultants following their visit to a parent education programme summarising the progress of learners (real names have not been used)

Rose recently became a survivor of domestic abuse and is still trying to find her feet after the break up. The parent support group has provided valuable friendships and she is now looking to do a course in Creative Writing to pursue an old dream.

Sarah is now doing a...course at Merton College...this is a person who, when she first came to the group did not say a word for 8 weeks.
